Every region has unique assets and distinct challenges – and these can shift over time. Regions that take time to understand these dynamics and rally to improve their outcomes are more likely to succeed in a rapidly-evolving global economy.
Since 2015, the Minneapolis-St. Paul region has seen its competitive position evolve in ways both positive and negative. For instance, the region has seen wage gaps narrow between white workers and workers of color faster than peer regions; over the same timeframe, the region's job growth has slowed, falling behind peer regions.
Changes to Dashboard indicators since 2015 can be measured in two ways: changes in indicator value and changes in peer rank. Taken together, these offer insight into the region’s competitive position. The scatterplot below visualizes the region’s competitive shifts since 2015, defining four quadrants of indicators:
- Rising competitors: indicators that are trending in a positive direction, leading to a rise in peer ranking.
- Slow builders: indicators that are trending in a positive direction more slowly than peers, leading to a fall in peer ranking
- Relative strengths: indicators that are trending in a negative direction more slowly than peers, leading to a rise in peer ranking
- Declining assets: indicators that are trending in a negative direction, leading to a fall in peer ranking.
