Plymouth, MN — State leaders joined Philips today (Thursday, April 10, 2025) to celebrate a major investment that strengthens Minnesota’s global leadership in medical technology, including the addition of new manufacturing and R&D space, a new medtech training center, significant job creation and workforce expansion.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Commissioner Matt Varilek joined Philips executives and state economic development leaders in Plymouth for the event.
“Whether you’re a small business or a global company, Minnesota continues to be one of the best places to start, grow, and expand your business,” said Governor Walz. “Philips’ expansion in Plymouth speaks to the talent, resources, and support available to companies looking to grow in Minnesota. This is good news for the community and great news for the state as we continue expanding our footprint as a leader in medical technology.”
"DEED is working with a number of great partners to elevate Minnesota as a global leader in several target industries, including medtech and advanced manufacturing, said Matt Varilek, DEED commissioner. “Philips' expansion shows our plan is working, and we stand ready to help more business expand across Minnesota."
The expanded footprint in Plymouth will include a cutting-edge facility focused on image-guided therapy innovation and training of customers from around the world. Philips’ new Global Customer MedTech Training Center will host healthcare professionals and technology experts to learn about life-saving technologies and procedures.
The State of Minnesota, through DEED’s Job Creation Fund and Minnesota Investment Fund, is supporting the project with a $3.5 million award, underscoring the strategic value of the expansion to Minnesota’s MedTech sector.
“This project is a powerful signal to the world that the Greater MSP region is a thriving global hub for medical technology,” said Peter Frosch, President and CEO of GREATER MSP. “Our designation as a U.S. Tech Hub for MedTech reflects the strength of this ecosystem—and Philips’ decision to expand here demonstrates the confidence leading global companies have in our people, infrastructure, and future.”
Philips’ growth in Plymouth is part of a broader trend reinforcing Minnesota’s position at the forefront of the global medical technology landscape.
“Philips’ expansion sends a strong message that Medical Alley continues to be the epicenter of health innovation and care,” said Roberta Antoine Dressen, President & CEO of Medical Alley. “With world-class companies like Philips investing in our state, we’re not only building on our legacy of innovation—we're shaping the future of global healthcare.”
