Sunrise Banks calls itself “the world’s most socially responsible bank.” Visually distinctive with its radiant sunburst logo, Sunrise offers financially inclusive products for both business and personal banking that aim to better the lives of clients in the Twin Cities metro and beyond. A new investor in the GREATER MSP Partnership, Sunrise is a certified B Corporation, a certified Community Development Financial Institution, a Public Benefit Corporation and member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values.
Founded by current CEO David Reiling and his father, William, Sunrise has been serving the urban core of Minneapolis and Saint Paul since 1986. David is a social entrepreneur and innovator on the cutting edge of fintech and financial wellness. He strives to forge meaningful partnerships that drive sustainable economic growth. The bank, driven by David’s vision, focuses on positive community engagement with ethical banking and partners with like-minded companies to extend its mission nationally and around the world.
We asked David about his recent decision to invest in the work of the GREATER MSP Partnership.
What makes Sunrise unique?
We see ourselves as a social engine for good. Social responsibility means thinking about what we do from a larger perspective than just banking.
Why did you become an investor?
Joining the GREATER MSP Partnership allows us to do even more of what we are most passionate about: being a social engine for good and strengthening our community. Greater MSP’s partnerships and initiatives will allow us to share our expertise and resources with new people, and this gives us a seat at more tables with people who have similar goals.
What do you hope Sunrise will get from investing?
It will help us increase our impact in the communities we serve and will increase our reach and ability to bring impact lending to low- and moderate-income people and communities.
What inspires you at work each day?
As a bank, we touch many industries and aspects of life, and we’re passionate about serving the greater good. We are committed to volunteerism and give a minimum of 2 percent net income per year through corporate donations and sponsorships. We encourage employees to do the same with 40 hours of volunteer paid time off through activities such as our annual Charitable Giving Week, Pay It Forward program, coffee bar donations, donation drives and Habitat for Humanity.
